We’re very excited to announce that level 1 of Central Library will be undergoing refurbishment works starting 24 August and continuing until early November 2026. We’re installing new carpet, creating dedicated study zones and creating a more welcoming space – based on your feedback. 

Please note: the main open area of level 1 of the Central Library will be closed, as shown below. Levels 0, 2 and 3 will continue to operate as normal, with services and study areas available across these floors. 

Access changes 

There will be diversions to usual paths of travel, including to the Accessible path (see below). Please take note of and follow the directions and diversions marked on signage.  

Look out for our roving Library staff members, who will be around to help and guide you! 

What stays open 

✔️ Levels 0, 2 and 3 of the Central Library remain open throughout the project, accessible via the stairs and lifts on Level 0 (near Flinders Connect). 

✔️ The northern wing of the Library — including HDR Central, the Disability Space, Teaching Rooms (151, 152, 163, 164, 165), and the Noel Stockdale Room — accessible via the lifts. Follow the signage. 

✔️ The 24/7 returns chute.

Service relocations 

Wondering where else you can study, or where to find a particular service while level 1 is closed? Here’s your guide to what’s being relocated and also alternative services during the works. 

Borrowing books

Self-check scanners will be available on levels 2 and 3, so you can still borrow books as usual.

Holds and Document Delivery 

Holds and document delivery items remain available for collection at the Library Information Desk during staffed hours. If you need to collect items outside staffed hours (Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm), you can request to have your items held at an alternative branch instead — Sturt, Medical, City or Tonsley. 

Read and Return 

A selection of Read and Return books will be available at the Pop-Up Library and Level 0 of the Library. You can also find them at our Tonsley, Medical and City Campus libraries. 

Statistical consulting services

From 28 August, the University’s Statistical Consultant, Dr Pawel Skuza, will be temporarily located in level 3, room 3.8 due to separate works taking place in HDR Central.
