Refining Research Pitches: HDR Students Skills & Snacks Workshop

On April 13, the College of Medicine and Public Health (CMPH) HDR representatives* (supported by the Research Education and Development Hub) hosted the ‘Developing Your Research Pitch’ workshop for Higher Degree Research (HDR) students.

The event aimed to provide students with an opportunity to network with fellow researchers and learn from Dr Amy Wyatt, an esteemed science communicator and researcher, about the art of research pitching. With 30 attendees joining both in-person and online, the day was filled with engaging discussions, practical activities, and valuable insights.

One of the highlights of the event was the opportunity for HDR students to put Dr Wyatt’s tips and tricks into practice through a ‘speed dating’ round of pitch practice. This allowed students to refine their pitches and receive feedback from their peers, resulting in increased confidence in developing and presenting their research ideas. Many students found this activity to be the most impactful in terms of networking, as it facilitated interactions and discussions among students with similar research interests or approaches.

As the first workshop in the HDR Skills & Snacks series, the April event set a high standard for future workshops. The feedback from this event will be utilized to inform upcoming sessions, and the organizers are eager to receive ideas and suggestions from attendees for future events.

“We are excited to continue the series of workshops and build on the success of this event. We welcome feedback and ideas from our attendees on what they would like to see in future workshops,” said the CMPH HDR Representatives, encouraging participants to share their thoughts or ideas via email to cmph.hdrcop@flinders.edu.au.

*CMPH HDR Representatives include Nicole Grivell (Clinical Translation), Alana White (Discovery Biosciences), Nathan Harrison (Healthy Communities), and Ellen Wynn (Rural and remote).
