Medical Science Success: Alumni Spotlight on Julia Romano

Clinical Network Scientist at iCCNet SA Julia Romano’s path to Medical Science at Flinders University has been marked by diverse experiences and a strong desire to make a difference. Initially studying a Diploma of Programming and pursuing a career as a Microsoft Certified Hardware and Software Technician, Julia also ventured into the wine industry as well as ran her own Computer Repairs Business. However, she longed for a field that would have a meaningful impact on people’s lives and leverage her keen interest in science. This led her to return to study and pursue Medical Science, becoming the first person in her family to obtain a university degree and setting an example for her children.

Julia reflects on her experiences at Flinders and how her education has shaped her career, highlighting valuable skills and standout elements of the university. She particularly emphasises the practical application of her knowledge in a variety of topics, particularly in understanding disease pathology.

“There is so much of my degree that I am now using in my day-to-day work life.”

One standout element for Julia was her Professional Placement in Medical Science (MDSC3102) in a Virology laboratory. She describes it as her “first taste of working as a scientist” and credits it for her subsequent employment in the Virology laboratory at SA Pathology, where she contributed to the state’s COVID response.

I never could have imagined at the time of my placement that I would be using the experience I gained in response to a pandemic. I feel very fortunate that I was able to be of service to our community.

Reflecting on the impact of her education at Flinders, Julia mentions the refinement of her analytical thinking skills and the focus on disease pathophysiology. These aspects have directly influenced her work at SA Health, such as the implementation of a Remote Health Monitoring program for chronic disease in Aged Care.

Julia values the mentorship she received at Flinders, particularly from her Professional Placement supervisor Professor Jill Carr.

“Watching the approach to her work and the way she problem-solved taught me so much and has had a strong influence on the way that I work today.”

The relationships and connections Julia built at Flinders, including her virology professor, continue to positively contribute to her growth and learning.  Looking ahead, Julia envisions her studies at Flinders opening doors to a Health Management role, combining her skills and experiences to make a difference.

In recommending Flinders to others, Julia emphasises the caring and outcome-focused teaching staff.

“If you want teachers that care about the outcome of your studies, then you need to go to Flinders. Flinders University places a greater emphasis on Biology, and Pathogenesis and Pathophysiology which is very useful when out in the workplace.”

Her experience at Flinders University empowered her with practical skills, deep knowledge of medical science, and influential mentorship. Her education continues to drive her impact in the field, and she appreciates the supportive atmosphere and standout elements that set Flinders apart.
