Get to know your College: Michelle Simmons

What is your role and what does your work focus on?

I am a proud Wakka Wakka Aboriginal woman from Cherbourg, Queensland.

I am also a newly appointed Indigenous Lecturer teaching Indigenous Knowledge and Culture based at the Alice Springs campus.

My work mainly focuses on co-delivering our Introduction to Central Australian Cultures and context, our Aboriginal Culture Awareness Programmes and various projects.

Where did you work before joining CMPH?

Before joining CMPH, I worked at University Of South Australia delivering undergraduate courses to education students and private consultancy work in delivering Cultural Awareness Programmes and Reconciliation.

What journey brought you to this point in your career?

My journey in my career brought me to Alice Springs as I have spent a considerable time living rural and remote in the Northern Territory including Darwin and Yulara.

I have only ever visited Alice Springs and when the opportunity arose to live and work here,  I welcomed it with open arms and heart.

What is something you love most about your work?

I love many things about my work but it is the people you meet and new friendships you make which are a highlight.

Also being able to share my knowledge, experience and my Aboriginal culture with others is also why I love what I do.

How do you like to relax or spend your spare time?

In my spare time at the moment I do a lot of face time with family down south and on the east coast, spending time with friends here in Alice and creative writing.
