Vanshika finds practical clinical learning in Flinders’ Postgraduate Counselling program

Vanshika Bhaskar, a first-year student in the Masters of Counselling and Behavioural Health program, shares her experiences in pursuing her dream career path. Originally from India, Vanshika highlights the practicality and unique opportunities Flinders’ counselling program offers.

Choosing to continue her counselling journey at Flinders was influenced by two main factors: financial assistance for international students, and the program’s practical hands-on approach. Unlike her previous studies in clinical psychology, Vanshika appreciates the emphasis on real-world skills and placements provided by Flinders, setting it apart from other institutions.

“I chose Flinders for the practical approach my course provides, as it is a vital component throughout the two-year degree. This was a relief for me because there are limited universities, not only in Australia but internationally, where students are given the opportunity to undertake placements, especially in the field of psychology and counselling.”

One standout aspect of Vanshika’s experience at Flinders has been the support she received as an international student. From organised meetups to inclusive teaching methodologies, she felt welcomed and integrated into the academic community. Her professors have been pillars of support, ensuring that international students like Vanshika feel heard and included.

Through her topics, Vanshika has been able to build her confidence through practical exercises. These experiences have been instrumental in preparing her for her future career as a counsellor.

“I have a limited experience in dealing with clients face to face – but with topics like Counselling Skills and Basics of low-intensity CBT, we are required to perform role plays and to implement strategies as a therapist which helps me to build on my confidence and acquire important skills.”

While Vanshika is yet to undertake supervised placements, she is eager to apply her skills in working with marginalised communities, particularly LGBTQIA+ youth. Her aspirations include creating safe spaces and addressing the unique challenges faced by this community.

To prospective students considering Flinders University or a career in counselling, Vanshika offers valuable advice: seek out a practical curriculum and a supportive environment where your opinions are respected.

“For someone looking for a practical curriculum and as well as a space where your opinions and beliefs are respected and attended, Flinders is the place to be.
