MD1 rural visit to their future MDRS 2026 regions

The Doctor of Medicine (MD) Year 1 students visited their future rural sites last week, and are excited to be part of the final Doctor of Medicine Rural Stream (MDRS) program cohort before it being replaced by the SA Rural Medical Program (beginning in 2025).

During their visit they were welcomed to the program in a Teams session by Dr Peter Michelmore (Clinical Educator) and Tori Edmonds (Program Manager) The campus Program Administrators organised a packed week of activities, touring and learning about the communities where they will spend their clinical years, visiting hospitals, GP clinics, meeting future educators and supervisors and touring their future campuses and accommodation facilities.

Highlights included a clinical session with current MDRS year 3 students and clinical educators, adventure quizzes and treasure hunts to locate landmarks and in Mt Gambier, some brave students swam in the Little Blue Lake. Michele van Niekerk and the Regional Training Hub generously provided each GGT student with a voucher to purchase one of the well-known and delicious scrolls from Scroll Queen.

Students also spent time in their future clinics participating in clinical observation and with GP’s in one-on-one sessions.

Their week finished with a dinner, joined by year 3 MDRS students, educators and program administrators prior to returning to Bedford Park and all are looking forward to both their year 2 visit and clinical year in 2026.
