We’re off to India tomorrow! A group of 12 speech pathology students will be travelling to the base of the Himalayas in Himachal Pradesh to work in two schools for children who have disabilities. There will be no actual speech pathologists there with us, but we will skype back to Australia to ask advice and make sure that we are on the right track. It’s been a pretty new experience already trying to plan for a placement that’s outside of the country, with children who will most likely not speak any English. I’m so excited to have the experience though. It’s going to require a huge amount of creativity and flexibility, but I’ll come out the other side being able to handle unusual clinical situations much more easily! I’m most nervous about the language barrier, not only between us and the children but also between us and the staff. I’ve been brushing up on my Hindi though, so if nothing else at least they will be able to have a good laugh at my atrocious accent. I’m most looking forward to experiencing life and education in a culture and community that is completely different to where I have grown up. The whole trip is going to be fantastic and I feel very lucky to have been given the opportunity.
