John Chalmers Oration 2016

Suzanne Cory from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute will deliver this year’s John Chalmers Oration on Thursday.

The Oration commemorates the work of Emeritus Professor John Chalmers AC, who was Flinders’ first Professor of Medicine from 1975-1996.

Professor Chalmers has a significant presence in medical research in Australia and was a major influence in the development of the Flinders School of Medicine, Flinders Medical Centre and the Repatriation General Hospital.

Professor Cory’s oration is titled “Harnessing Death for Life: A New Approach to Cancer Therapy”.

She is currently a Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow of The University of Melbourne and an Honorary Distinguished Professorial Fellow in the Molecular Genetics of Cancer Division of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute.

Previously, she was Director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute and Professor of Medical Biology at the University of Melbourne from 1996 to 2009.

At the Institute, and later as President of the Australian Academy of Science (2010-2014), she has championed investment in science and science education in Australia.

This year’s Oration will take place on Thursday 11 August from 12 noon-1 pm in Health Sciences Lecture Theatre Complex HSLTC 1.01
