Legal eagle heading to South Africa

Flinders law student Helena Errey-White been awarded a Law Foundation Human Rights Scholarship to work with the Projects Abroad Human Rights Office (PAHRO) in Cape Town, South Africa.

Helena has already gained valuable work experience at the Flinders Legal Access Clinic (FLAC), and will depart for her next venture in July 2018 to spend four weeks in South Africa as an intern with PAHRO.

As part of her internship,  Helena will have the opportunity to run legal clinics, assist ‘walk-in’ clients, attend court and conduct moot court hearings.

Importantly she will be able to apply the research skills she has gained in case law, legislation and constitutional law to real-world settings.

“It will be interesting to learn how the South African Bill of Rights assists members of the community to defend their human rights,” says Helena.

“I’m also looking forward to using the skills I developed while interning at the FLAC to do similar tasks at PAHRO in their legal service department.”

The experience of applying South African law will further build on the comparative studies topics that Helena has undertaken at Flinders University.
