Every year South Australia welcomes 20000 newborn children into the world and around 3700 spend their childhood in and out of home care. This lecture will explore why systems are not living up to expectations and what can be done to reduce prolonged stress, neglect and trauma experienced by these children.
CEO of Relationships Australia Dr Claire Ralfs will discuss how family services may be professionally organised and clinically coherent, but vulnerable families still find family services chaotic, confusing, unresponsive and not integrated.
Dr Ralfs will present on the need to identify and remove road blocks to improve collaboration between services. She will discuss how more holistic and standardised screening processes need to map strengths and vulnerabilities.
A panel of leaders from the sector will look at how a more integrated family service system could be built in South Australia including:
- Ann-Marie Hayes, Executive Director, Early Years and Child Development at the Department of Human Services
- Craig Rigney, CEO KWY
- Cathy Taylor, Chief Executive of the Department for Child Protection
Professor Sarah Wendt, Director of the SWIRLS research centre at Flinders University, will host the evening’s discussion.
