Media training events for researchers

Three media training sessions have been planned in the next few months to help researchers maximise exposure for their work. The sessions, being presented by Flinders’ Media and Communications, the Office of Communication, Marketing and Engagement, and Flinders Library, together with Research Development and Support, will each cover different aspects of media engagement and skill sets, are being delivered only in an online format as one-hour web conferences.

Media Training for Researchers will be at 10am on Thursday 13 May. Generating and measuring the public impact of your research is an increasingly important requirement, and media performance is a key element. This session will enable researchers to understand the media, how it works, what it wants and how to increase media interest in – and coverage of – your research.
Learn how you can be an effective communicator across mainstream media channels as Karen Ashford (Director, Media and Communications)  covers the basics of identifying what’s newsworthy and why, effective media releases, and fundamental presentation and interview skills.

Promoting publications and building a research brand will be at 9.30am on Wednesday 16 June. To help you get the most out of your research outputs and start building a research brand, this workshop will investigate: a check list of considerations; how to increase the impact of research outputs using online tools; engaging with the Flinders media team; recording engagement and impact – storing, collecting and collating.
This session is recommended for ECR, MCR and established researchers – whether they be new or novice social media users who are looking to build their online presence in research. Participants will learn how to maximise research impact after publication with institutional support (through OCME and Library), recommended tools, guidelines for recording impact, and strategies for building your research brand.

Social Media for Researchers will be at 10 am on Wednesday 28 July. Social media can be an excellent tool for researchers to promote their research and share it with a wider audience, so this session will provide an overview of different social media platforms and discuss how to harness social media to promote your research. The media team will also explain how to effectively engage with audiences to build a following, as well as using social media for research impact. Karen Ashford will be joined by Flinders’ researchers who are established social media experts and together they will share their experience and advice. This session is recommended for new or novice social media users who are looking to build their online presence in research.

Bookings for all three sessions can be made online through Ienrol.
