Canvas FAQs: unfinished quizzes

This week the Canvas project team provides an answer to: What happens when a student starts a quiz but doesn’t finish it?

Sometimes students will start a quiz, but for various reasons, do not finish it. In Moodle, quizzes were set to automatically submit all outstanding submissions once the quiz had closed or the time limit was exceeded. This was a blanket rule – every outstanding submission was automatically submitted, every time.

In Canvas, classification of an outstanding submission is broader. If a student is attempting a quiz at the same time it is being edited, their attempt is also classed as an outstanding submission.

Because of this broader definition in Canvas, instructors need to choose which outstanding submissions should be submitted on behalf of students. We recommend instructors review submissions before grades are finalised.

When there are submissions that need reviewing, a message will appear in the Moderate the Quiz screen, prompting you to check these attempts.
