This week’s films screening as part of the 14th Latin American Film Festival hosted by Flinders University throughout November, include:

  • 6 November 2018: Crossing a Shadow (Peru)
  • 7 November 2018: The DiCaprio from Corozopando (Venezuela)
  • 8 November 2018: 60km/hr (Uruguay)

Future University Conference

A two-day event at Flinders University will explore the future of higher education in Australia under neoliberalism. With keynotes from Professor Marie Brennan, Professor Lew Zipin and Dr Andrew Miller, day 1 will comprise presentations and discussions on the hot topics in tertiary; day 2 includes a collaborative writing workshop.

Molecular Science & Technologies Seminar Series

Dr Nadim Darwish from Curtin University will present on ‘Single-Molecule Electronics: Chemical Reactions at the Single-Molecule Level’.

Society’s demand for faster, smaller, lighter electronics is insatiable, but as conventional electronic components begin to reach the limits of their performance, where else can we look? Dr Darwish’s research looks at the possibility of electrical components made from single molecules which could produce electronic devices at a scale that would redefine the perceived limits of electronics and open up new avenues of applications.

Mental health in cancer – two talks at the Flinders Centre for Innovation in Cancer

Visiting Professor Maggie Watson from the Institute of Cancer Research, UK, will discuss building bridges between cancer care and mental health by exploring the field of psycho-oncology, including what’s available, what’s missing and the costs of providing cancer services without quality mental health care.

Dr Lisa Beatty will outline the steps and challenges in developing complex psychosocial web-based interventions through a co-creation design process, using the example of an online psychosocial intervention she is developing for women with metastatic breast cancer.

Eat, play, sleep – a healthy start to life

Parents are advised to start their babies on solids when they are developmentally ready, sometime between 4-6 months, but what is the ideal time? Questions around a healthy start to life will be answered by Adelaide experts Dr Merryn Netting, Paediatric Dietitian and Research Fellow, SAHMRI and Dr Matthew Scholar, Paediatrician, Flinders Private Hospital.
