Emails inviting you to complete the Student Experience Survey 2024 are going out. If you see one in your inbox, I encourage you to complete it. Learn more in the post.
As a student you get asked A LOT of questions. Some of them help you learn. Some of them seek your opinion. Some of them ask how you are doing. I wouldn’t be surprised if you told me you had question fatigue.
But if you can muster the energy, I encourage you to explore the Student Experience Survey (SES).
Starting 30th July, until 1st September, you may find in your email inbox (Flinders addresses) an invitation to participate in the Student Experiences Survey (SES)
*I strongly encourage you to check this out*
This is not an initiative by Flinders, but Flinders participates because it gives us incredibly valuable information about the experiences of students in our university. We use it (I know, because I use it) to brainstorm ways to improve the student experience and enhance teaching and learning here at Flinders.
You may also find that some lecturers or topic coordinators mention it, using the following slide.
“The SES is your chance to have your say about what it’s like being a higher education student in Australia today. By sharing your experiences, you can assist institutions and the government to improve course offerings, student services and campus facilities.”
If that is less interesting to you, there are weekly draws to win $1000. Since 2021, Flinders students have won $4000 from completing the SES!

If you want to get a feel for the content of the survey, you can look at the reports from 2022 (2023 is coming out very soon). There is a lot of data there, but you can see the different domains that universities are ranked on. It is kinda interesting.
In short, the survey addresses multiple aspects of the student experience:
- Teaching quality – what you think of the teaching here at Flinders
- Learner engagement – how engaged you are with the various activities of study (online discussions, group work, interaction with other students, connection to institution)
- Skills development – the extent to which you think you are developing the skills required for learning but also future employability in your chosen field
- Student support – whether there are services (like Health, Counselling and Disability, Careers, learning advisors) available to help you complete your studies and whether those services are actually helpful
- Learning resources – the quality of the facilities here at Flinders
- Wellbeing – I believe this year, there will be some questions about wellbeing
The more students at Flinders who participate, the better data we get on how students are finding their experience at Flinders. So please participate.
Also, be honest in your answers. Whilst we’d love to find out that your experience here at Flinders is meeting every one of your needs (that is what we are aiming for), it is ultimately more helpful if we get a good sense of what you are finding good, and what you are not finding so good.
