A reproduced piece of important information about Student ID cards and preferred names.
Starting 9 July 2025, all newly issued student ID cards will display your preferred first name as recorded in the Student System, supporting a more inclusive and respectful campus environment.
This initiative is designed to support students who use a name different from their legal name, helping ensure your ID better represents your identity.
Here’s an example of the updated ID card design:

Free ID Card Reissue Period
From 9 July 2025 until the end of 2025, you can request a new student ID card at no cost that reflects your preferred first name.
Please note that existing ID cards will remain valid, so you don’t need to request a replacement unless you choose to.
Before You Request a New Card
To ensure your preferred name appears correctly:
- If you haven’t already, submit a request via Ask Flinders to update your preferred name in the Student System.
- Once your preferred name has been updated and appears in the Student System, you can then request a new student ID card using the process detailed below.
Please note that when you update your preferred name in the Student System, it will automatically appear across key university platforms, including FLO (Canvas), Service One and Microsoft Teams. This means your preferred name is visible to peers, academic staff, and in official communications.
Important: If you do not add a preferred name, your legal first name (as listed in the Student System) will appear in bold on your ID card by default. This applies to all newly issued cards.
