Eating Well @ Flinders

Eating Well @ Flinders is a SSAF funded initiative to help promote and support healthier eating and good wellbeing for students at Flinders University.

I think their goals strongly align with those of the Health, Counselling and Disability Service, hence I agreed to sit on their steering committee.

That committee met this morning and I got a chance to hear about just how much they’ve achieved in a short period of time.

They’ve been doing food/cooking demonstrations, information sessions on how to interpret the ‘health star’ rating system, supported students during exams with healthy snacks and information on eating for productivity, mapped the food environment here at Flinders, trained nutrition students to act as volunteers/ambassadors, conducted the Student Food Survey and set up two social media accounts which are regularly publishing content.

All this with just 1 day per week of funding for their project officer Rebecca.

Leading into Semester 2, there are lots of ways that you can interact with the Eating Well team.

  1. They’ll be at O’week with a stall on the 29th and 30th July
  2. They’ll be doing cooking demonstrations at the Flinders Market, Flinders Living and Sturt Campus
  3. Their survey is running until the end of August. Share your thoughts and opinions so they can provide the best events/resources going forward
  4. You can connect with them via their Facebook page and Instagram account where they post photos from events, recipes, news items but also answer common questions about nutrition and squash nutritional myths.

Students rate ‘wellbeing’ as one of the most important areas of focus for the university.

Given that nutrition can be used to improve physical as well as mental wellbeing, having a group like this in the university is critical.

So please show your support by connecting with the team, via one of the options above.

If you have any questions or recommendations for things they could focus on, message them via their Facebook page.
