🚩 Create Your Own Mini Flag with Artist Kait James

Sometimes wellbeing isn’t about fixing a problem. It’s about making space to create, express yourself, and explore new ideas.

On Wednesday 14 October, Flinders University Museum of Art is partnering with Oasis to bring artist Kait James to campus for a hands-on mini-flag making workshop inspired by her exhibition Kait James: Red Flags.

In this creative workshop, you’ll design and make your own mini flag, adding messages, symbols, or ideas that are meaningful to you. Along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to engage with contemporary art, creative practice, and First Peoples perspectives in a welcoming and supportive environment.

Creative activities can support wellbeing by helping us slow down, focus our attention, express ourselves, and connect with others. You don’t need any artistic experience to participate, just a willingness to have a go.

About the exhibition

The workshop is connected to Kait James: Red Flags, an exhibition by Wadawurrung artist Kait James that explores identity, culture and contemporary First Nations experiences through humour, creativity and social commentary. Drawing on vintage commercial products that portrayed stereotyped and insensitive images of Aboriginal people, James reworks these objects through embroidery and other interventions, creating new narratives that challenge assumptions and invite reflection. Combining personal stories, political insight and wit, the exhibition offers a compelling perspective on Australian history, culture and representation.
