Increased Capacity for Counselling Services at Headspace

Local headspace centres, which provide mental health and other types of support to young people have increased capacity. Details in the post.

The team here at Health, Counselling and Disability Services recently received communications from headspace.

If you’ve not heard of headspace before (not to be confused with the meditation app headspace), they are “Australia’s National Youth Mental Health Foundation, providing early intervention mental health services to 12-25 year olds”.

They have centres around Australia where they “support young people with mental health, physical health (including sexual health), alcohol and other drug services, as well as work and study support”.

The communication was about some increased capacity at those centres.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Intakes Available Quickly: You can get an intake appointment within a few weeks, and if suitable, you can start psychological therapy or peer support within 1-2 weeks after that.
  • Wide Range of Services: Headspace provides free, confidential, youth-friendly support for mental health, alcohol and drug use, sexual health, and work or study services.
  • Immediate Referrals: There are no waitlists at most centres, so immediate referrals are welcome.
  • New Youth-Friendly GPs: GPs are increasing their hours at the Onkaparinga, Marion, Edinburgh North and Adelaide centres.
  • Employment Support: Available at Edinburgh North and Onkaparinga centres.

If you need support, consider self-referring to one of the centres based on your location. Here are the links to make a referral:

Of course, we have many of these services as well at Flinders. But depending on your location, your needs and preferences, you might find one of the headspace centres better suited to your needs.

If you are not sure if headspace might be a good option for you, feel free to make contact with our counselling team to have a conversation about it.
