Regular readers might know that I am a big fan of Empire Times. I’ve written about it before. This is a repost of content that recently appeared on Ping! as FUSA is recruiting the 2027 Empire Times Editors.
Three paid positions are available for Flinders students to help lead the University’s student magazine across print and digital publishing.
Empire Times is Flinders University’s student magazine. Published in print four times a year and online throughout the year, it provides a platform for student writing, art, culture, opinion, interviews, humour, politics and campus life.
The student editorial team helps set the direction of the magazine and turn student ideas into work that people will want to pick up, read and share.
What do the editors do?
The editors work collaboratively across fostering student voices, contributor support, editing, pitches, chasing stories, digital content and shaping each issue.
The work may include helping a first-time contributor develop an idea, editing a submitted article, finding a story on campus, planning online content or working with the production team to bring an issue together.
Applicants do not need formal publishing experience. Relevant experience might come from coursework, student media, clubs, creative projects, writing, design, social media, community involvement or other collaborative work.
Are the roles paid?
Yes. Each editor receives an $8,500 honorarium in acknowledgement of the contribution required.
The opportunity is open to current Flinders University students who can participate throughout the 2027 editorial term.

Students who would like to learn more before applying can attend an information session.
Two in-person sessions will be held at The Nucleus, near Flinders Connect at Bedford Park, on Wednesday 12 August:
