A celebration of creativity: Flinders Festival of Creative Arts 2026

Film, theatre, creative writing, visual arts and more. From 3 November to 18 December, the Flinders Festival of Creative Arts is bringing student creativity into the spotlight.

As the academic year draws to a close, many students are finishing assignments, preparing for exams or wrapping up placements.

But while one part of the university is winding down, another is getting ready to put on a show.

The Flinders Festival of Creative Arts is a celebration of the imagination, talent and hard work of Flinders students, graduates and staff. Across November and December, the festival brings together performances, film screenings, exhibitions and other creative experiences at Bedford Park and venues around Adelaide.

You don’t have to be studying creative arts to enjoy it. Whether you’re interested in film, curious about theatre, love a good story or simply want to experience something different, there’s plenty to explore.

A few things to look out for

There’s quite a bit on the program, but here are five events that caught our attention.

3 NOVEMBER • NEXUS ARTS

Stories brought to life

Moments in the Everglow celebrates the launch of a short story anthology written by third-year Creative Writing students, with dramatic readings by Flinders Drama Centre students. An opportunity to see what happens when written stories find their way onto the stage.

11–13 NOVEMBER • ADELAIDE FESTIVAL CENTRE

Original stories on stage

Wrestling with Tomorrow: New Voices on Stage features original short works created and performed by graduating Flinders Drama Centre Honours students. Personal, political, comic and unexpected, the performances explore what it means to face an uncertain future.

17 NOVEMBER • THE VOID, FLINDERS UNIVERSITY

Step into the world of virtual production

Ever wondered how filmmakers combine physical performances with digital environments? The Flinders Virtual Production Showcase offers a glimpse behind the scenes at The Void, with live demonstrations and projects showcasing the techniques used by Flinders students and staff.

18 NOVEMBER • BEDFORD PARK PLAZA

A movie night under the stars

Audience gathered on the lawns and steps of Bedford Park Plaza to watch a film on a large outdoor screen.

The Screen Student Showcase: Sunset Screening transforms the Bedford Park Plaza into an outdoor cinema, screening short films made by Flinders Screen, Film and Television students.

Bring a picnic blanket, something warm and perhaps a friend or two. There’ll even be complimentary popcorn, fairy floss and soft drinks. The screening runs from 7pm to 10pm.

Colourful expressive artwork featuring painted figures, textured brushstrokes and layered colours.

3–18 DECEMBER • LIGHT SQUARE GALLERY

Art that invites you to look closer

Little Big Show brings together six South Australian artists working across photography, ceramics, sculpture, painting, sound and other mediums. Presented by the Bachelor of Creative Arts (Visual Arts), the exhibition explores everything from childhood and play to loneliness, environmental loss and hope. No registration is required.

And there’s more. The festival also includes experimental film screenings, theatre exploring climate responsibility and social conventions, and a free screening and panel discussion examining storytelling and sexual violence prevention. Some events explore challenging subject matter, so check their descriptions and content notes before attending.

More than entertainment

One of the things I like about university life is that you’re surrounded by people exploring ideas in ways that might be quite different from your own.

Creative arts offer opportunities to encounter new perspectives, experience different emotions, consider challenging questions and appreciate the imagination and skill of others.

And there’s something particularly enjoyable about seeing what fellow students have been creating throughout the year.

The festival is an opportunity to support those students, discover something new and perhaps enjoy a change of pace as the year comes to an end.
