Got an idea that could help students feel more connected at Flinders?

Have an idea that could help students feel more connected, included or seen at Flinders? Flinders Community Grants are now open for student-led projects that build belonging, celebrate diverse communities and bring students together.

Some of the best parts of university life don’t come from official plans, strategies or committees.

They come from students noticing something.

A gap.
A need.
A group of people who could be better supported.
A culture, identity or community that deserves to be celebrated.
A small idea that might help someone feel a little more like they belong.

That is where Flinders Community Grants come in.

FUSA is now inviting expressions of interest for student-led projects that build belonging, celebrate diverse communities, improve inclusion and access, or bring students together in meaningful ways. The program is supported by Medibank.

The nice bit?

You don’t need to have a fully polished, perfectly planned idea before you apply. FUSA can help you shape it.

And no project is too small.

What kinds of ideas could be funded?

The grants are designed to support ideas that create a real benefit for students and student communities at Flinders.

Your idea could be:

  • a workshop, forum or student-led learning activity
  • a creative project, such as a book, short film, art exhibition, performance or installation
  • an event, gathering, celebration or campus activation
  • a community resource, toolkit or guide
  • something unusual, unexpected or delightfully hard to categorise

Basically, if your idea helps students feel more connected, included, represented or seen, it may be worth putting forward.

Who can apply?

You can apply as:

  • an individual student
  • part of a student group, collective or team
  • a club with an idea beyond regular club activity
  • a staff member working in genuine partnership with students, where the idea is clearly student-led

What the grants are about

The Community Grants are looking for projects that:

  • build belonging for students and communities who may experience barriers to connection, participation or visibility
  • celebrate diverse backgrounds, identities and lived experiences
  • create opportunities for students to come together through culture, creativity, shared learning or community connection

Your project does not have to meet every goal, but it should have a clear student community benefit and a thoughtful reason for why it matters.

What happens after you submit an idea?

The process is designed to be simple:

1️⃣ Share your idea – Submit an expression of interest and describe what you’d like to do.

2️⃣ FUSA takes a look – Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with the aim of responding within two weeks.

3️⃣ You can get help shaping it – If your idea needs more detail, FUSA can help with planning, design, promotion, logistics, event support or connecting you with the right people.

4️⃣ Make it happen – If approved, you’ll work with FUSA on the next steps to bring the idea to life.

What can’t be funded?

The grants are not designed for retrospective funding, routine club operations, coursework, assessment, conference attendance, research projects mainly for study, or activities focused mostly on individual academic or professional development without a broader student community benefit.

The key question is:

Will this idea help create community, belonging, inclusion or connection for students at Flinders?

If the answer is yes, it is probably worth exploring.
