Both the date and the coffee intake of the orientation team tells me that it is mid-year orientation!! A hearty welcome to new students and an invitation to existing students.
A quick post today to welcome the students joining us for the mid-year intake.
You’ll be doing orientation this week, which probably means there is a lot coming at you all at once: new systems, new places, new people, new acronyms, new expectations, and possibly a few moments of wondering where on earth you are supposed to be.
So, if you are somehow reading BetterU already, hello. Welcome. It is genuinely great to have you as part of the Flinders community.
I wrote a longer orientation post at the beginning of the year with a bunch of (simple) advices for students starting at Flinders. All of it, with the exception of specific references to time of year, applies to mid-year starters, so that is worth a read if you don’t already have a lot of information swimming 🐟 around in your head:

But my main message in this post is actually for existing students.
This week, you might notice some new faces around campus. Students looking a little lost, trying to find rooms, working out where things are, figuring out food, transport, classes, FLO, ID cards, support services and the general rhythm of university life.
If you get the chance, be kind. Say hello. Point someone in the right direction. Answer the question you remember having when you first arrived.
Starting university can be exciting, but it can also be disorienting. A small moment of friendliness from someone who already knows the place can make a surprisingly big difference.
There is also a selfish upside here: mid-year orientation brings a bit of extra life to campus. Activities, people around, stalls, freebies, and that general “something is happening” feeling. Existing students get to enjoy a little second-hand orientation energy too.
So, to our new students: welcome. We’re glad you’re here 🥳
And to our continuing students: keep an eye out for the new peeps. Help make the place feel a little easier to arrive in.
