Learn practical techniques for communicating with confidence, reading the room and making your ideas memorable in presentations, interviews, group work and everyday conversations.
The orientation peeps have taken what I think is an excellent path for Success week, which is to bring in an engaging topic expert.
When it comes to communication skills, I like to inhabit both ends of the spectrum. Sometimes being the clearest person in the room, sometimes being the most confusing.
My quirks aside, this should be a great session (I’ve heard from people who have attended Nathan’s session before).
Whether you are contributing to a group assignment, delivering a presentation, attending a networking event, preparing for a job interview or navigating a difficult conversation, how you communicate can change what happens next.
Join emotion researcher, professional voice artist and keynote speaker Dr Nathan Jones for Master Your Voice: How to Communicate Like a Pro – a highly practical two-hour workshop exploring how your voice, body language and storytelling work together.
Using six colour zones, Nathan will help you understand and experiment with different ways of communicating. You will learn how to:
- sound confident before you necessarily feel confident
- use your voice and body language more effectively
- read the energy of a room and adjust how you communicate
- make your ideas clearer and more engaging
- tell the story of your degree, skills and experiences in ways that employers, teammates and interviewers will remember
This is not about becoming the loudest person in the room or pretending to be someone you are not. It is about developing greater choice in how you communicate—and learning how to make your ideas land.

“Those in the room will practise live with a partner throughout the session. Students joining online, or on a rural campus, will work through the same core activities independently using a web app (the same Communication tool we used with Flinders professional staff) so they get real practice and a score, on their own time. In-room students also get the same app link at the end, so everyone leaves with a way to keep practising.”
