I’m 49 and have been working in my field for 25+ years. I still get value and learn how to upgrade my workflows from attending professional development events. Success week is a chance for you to skill up and the Orientation team have coordinated 3 great events to help.
Themed weeks allow us to orient students to useful ideas and practices to improve their university experience.
The next themed week that is coming up is “Success Week”. Just to be clear, you don’t need to limit your success to that week alone, but it is a good time, now that the semester is underway, to equip yourself with knowledge and tools for success.
As far as the details go: Success Week runs from 17–21 August, bringing together practical events, useful resources and support to help you succeed at university (and your life beyond university).
They’ve got some really neat events lined up, so I recommend adding at least one to your schedule:
💺 HR Hot Seat: Learn how employers hire

The Exchange, Student Hub, Bedford Park
Hear directly from recruitment and industry professionals about what happens after you submit a job application. Learn how applications are assessed, what employers look for during interviews and ask your own questions about the hiring process.
🔍 Search Smarter with findit@flinders + AI
Wednesday 19 August, 12.00–12.30 pm
Online
Learn how to find academic information quickly and confidently using findit@flinders. The session will also introduce Primo Research Assistant—an AI-powered tool that can help you identify relevant academic sources—and show you how to verify and refine its results.
💬 Master Your Voice: How to Communicate Like a Pro
Friday 21 August, 10.30 am–12.30 pm
Alere Function Room, Student Hub, Bedford Park
Join emotion researcher and professional voice-over artist Dr Nathan Jones for a practical workshop exploring voice, body language and storytelling. You’ll learn strategies for communicating confidently during presentations, group work, networking, interviews and challenging conversations.
📚 The Success Week website also includes a checklist and links to study support, Library services, career development, work-integrated learning, global experiences and the Student Support and Services Directory.
As you’ve no doubt noticed, there is always a lot happening at a university, in addition to your actual degree.
And, as a result, it can be quite overwhelming trying to work out what to attend and what not to.
I suggest following your curiosity.
Look at the three events above. Which one sparks the most interest in you? Start with that. Visit the site, register your attendance and pop it in your diary.
Then when the day comes, grab a coffee, rock up and take as much from the event as you need or want.
You don’t need to transform everything at once. One useful session, new resource or well-timed question could make the rest of your semester a little easier.
