Haidee and I recently ran a Supercommunicators workshop at the City Campus. Haidee took a moment to put together some reflections. Short version? We really enjoyed it, we think participants did as well, and we’re looking forward to offering it again next year.
Congratulations to our City Campus students and staff who recently attended the new Supercommunicators workshop at the City Campus. We now have Supercommunicators walking among us!
Supercommunicators is a two-session interactive workshop designed to help you master six essential communication strategies used by great communicators. Created by Haidee Baker and Gareth Furber from Health, Counselling and Disability Services, and inspired by the book Supercommunicators by Charles Duhigg, this workshop provides participants with real-life experience in practising these proven techniques.
What are the 6 strategies?
Prepare for the conversation – Learn how a little preparation can turn a casual chat into a productive, engaging conversation.
Ask open-ended questions – Discover how to invite deeper responses and richer interactions.
Get deep – Move beyond surface-level exchanges by encouraging emotional vulnerability and real dialogue.
Match the other person’s mood and energy – Develop emotional intelligence by aligning with the other person’s emotional state.
Prove you are listening – Practice active listening skills that help build trust and rapport.
Find common ground – Strengthen connections by identifying shared interests and experiences.
One of the things we really enjoyed about running the workshop was seeing participants be willing and able to practise these great conversational skills with very little teaching required. Conversations flowed, snacks were devoured, and the time flew! Participants also practised some of the skills outside of the group between sessions and reported back to the group on the positive impact of using these skills in everyday life.
So, if you come across someone with great communication skills at the City Campus, ask them if they attended the Supercommunicators workshop! And if you’d like to improve your own communication skills and connect more deeply with others, look out for the next Supercommunicators workshop which will be offered in Semester 1, 2025.

Thank you Gareth and Haidee for hosting this workshop. I’m one of the participants. I really like it and I want Gareth to know that you were good as well.😆
Thanks Nina
Haidee and I had a blast running this workshop and are really appreciative of your participation. We’re looking forward to running it again next year!!
