Whatever happened to the Horizon Award program?

Flinders’ beloved Horizon Award program has concluded, but its legacy of professional development opportunities continues through CareerHub and the upcoming Innovation and Future Award.

For as long as I can remember, Flinders had the Horizon Award program.

Students could engage in professional development activities – workshops, events, volunteering and networking – and receive recognition of this in the form of awards.

There were silver and gold and platinum awards, each reflecting a level of commitment the student showed to developing their work-ready skills.

I was fortunate enough to attend some of their award ceremonies at the end of the year, and see students who, alongside their degree, had done a bunch of additional training to get them ready for the workforce. It was very impressive. I even delivered a few trainings over the years (focused on mindfulness and resilience) into the program.

But in 2025, it came to an end!

Or did it?

Basically, yes.

The Horizon program itself is dead, but the workshops, events, volunteering opportunities are still available.

You’ll now find them in Careerhub.

And moves are afoot to create a similar award program (Innovation and Future Award), where you are recognised for your investment in your professional skillset., through the New Venture Institute’s centre for innovation and future skills (also found in Careerhub).

So whilst the Horizon program itself is no longer with us (RIP Horizon), the opportunities for students, from that program are alive and well.
