Update: More Ways to Get Study Support at Flinders

There is an art and a science to learning. And the artists and scientists you need helping you are at the Learning Lounge (in its various forms and locations).

At a recent Wellbeing Working Group meeting, Lalitha Velautham from Learning and Teaching Innovation shared that the study-support options from Student Learning Support Services (SLSS) study‑support options have expanded in terms of locations and times.

So, I thought it was a good opportunity to highlight what’s available and why it’s worth tapping into.

Why students use SLSS 🤔

It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking ‘because I am at uni, I must know how to study’ but that isn’t necessarily the case.

People come to university from many different backgrounds and having received varying levels of direct instruction on how to do learning things like write essays, reference things appropriately, prepare for exams, stay motivated etc.

So, it is actually really normal for students to need additional assistance in how to be a good student. That is where SLSS come in. SLSS helps you:

  • get unstuck on assignments
  • understand expectations and structure your ideas
  • build confidence in writing, referencing, and numeracy
  • stay motivated and focused when your brain is fighting you
  • develop the academic habits that make uni feel manageable
  • and much more………

It’s practical, human support (well, with the exception of their AI buddies – see below). Oh and it is judgement free.

What’s available (now with more choice) 🧑🏼‍🎓

SLSS now offers a wider mix of ways to get help, depending on how you like to work:

  • Learning Lounge drop‑ins across multiple campuses + online Short, targeted help whenever you need it — no booking required.
  • 20‑minute appointments A quieter, more private option if you prefer structured time.
  • Body‑doubling sessions Great for task initiation, focus, and neurodivergent‑friendly study rhythms.
  • 24/7 Learning Buddies (Study Buddy + Feedback Buddy) Always‑on support for writing, study questions, and assignment feedback.
  • SLSS FLO page Guides, videos, and self‑paced resources you can dip into anytime.

The idea is simple: whatever your study style, there’s a version of support that fits.
