Loneliness Awareness Week: make room for connection

Loneliness Awareness Week runs from 3-9 August 2026 and invites us to think about the small, practical ways we can make connection easier for ourselves and others.

Loneliness Awareness Week runs from 3-9 August 2026, with this year’s theme: Make Room for Connection.

It is a useful theme, because connection does not always happen automatically. Sometimes it needs space, invitation, timing and a little bit of design. A friendly welcome, a low-pressure activity, a clear invitation or a small moment of follow-up can make it easier for someone to take part.

The Loneliness Awareness Week Australia website has a range of resources for individuals, workplaces, education settings and community groups.

If you visit the site, you will find:

  • information about loneliness and why it matters
  • ideas for making everyday connection easier
  • examples of people and organisations helping others feel included
  • a Connection Map where you can find or register activities
  • a Connector Quiz to explore your own connection style
  • downloadable posters, social media tiles, conversation cards and campaign materials
  • practical suggestions for workplaces, schools, universities and community groups

The campaign toolkit also includes guidance on creating activities that feel welcoming and low-pressure. This includes thinking about things like friendly greeters, clear signage, flexible participation, quiet spaces, inclusive language and follow-up after events.

Loneliness can affect anyone, and it is not always visible from the outside. Awareness weeks like this are a chance to talk about loneliness more openly, but also to take small practical steps toward creating places where people feel more able to connect.
