Grief and Loss: A Helpful Resource When You’re Hurting (or Supporting Someone Who Is)

Grief Australia is a trusted national resource offering support, articles, counselling, and tools like the MyGrief app for those experiencing grief or supporting others through loss.

Grief touches many in our university community — whether from the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, or a major life transition. It’s one of the more common reasons students reach out to counselling services.

When I asked a grief treatment specialist recently for a reliable online resource, she pointed me to Grief Australia — a national not-for-profit organisation dedicated to helping people navigate grief and loss.

Their website offers a wide range of supports that might help you make sense of your own grief, support someone else, or even explore the topic further if you’re studying a health-related degree. Accessing online resources can be a powerful adjunct to seeing a counsellor.

On the site you’ll find:

Grief articles and information sheets – These are short, accessible reads that cover a wide range of topics like grief and sleep, types of loss, cultural perspectives, and how grief can show up differently for different people.

The MyGrief App – A free, easy-to-use mobile app to help people reflect on their grief, track how they’re going, and access practical coping tools. There’s also a section for those supporting someone who’s grieving.

Counselling services – Grief Australia offers professional bereavement counselling for people in Victoria, but telephone and telehealth services may be available in other regions (fees may apply). You can contact them directly to find out more. 1800 642 066 or email info@grief.org.au

In-depth content and reflections – The ‘Perspectives’ section includes a range of articles that reflect different grief experiences and reactions.

Detailed information on Grief Australia as an organisation – There’s also content about the organisation’s mission, history, and approach for those who want to explore further.

For health students and future professionals – If you’re studying psychology, counselling, social work or a related field, Grief Australia also offers training, webinars and professional development opportunities that may be of interest.

Whether you’re grieving now, supporting someone who is, or just building your understanding, Grief Australia is a trustworthy and compassionate resource. Sometimes just knowing where to begin can make a real difference.

Save it. Share it. You never know who might need it.
