Education student Kiora has flexed some serious creative muscle and created a website called The Mindful Spiral which maps 10 wellbeing activities to the walking trail in Flinders Gully. Very cool!!
As exam season looms (I’ll be writing about that again soon), finding simple ways to support your wellbeing becomes more important than ever.
That’s why we’re excited to share a new student-created resource that encourages mindfulness and balance through nature-based activities.
The Mindful Spiral is a website developed by a Kiora, third-year Education student at Flinders University as part of an Outdoor Education assignment.
The task was to design, undertake, and reflect on an individual project that could positively impact both the creator and others. Inspired by the stress experienced during a teaching placement, and a personal love of the outdoors, the student created a resource that promotes wellbeing through nature.
The site features:
- 10 practical outdoor activities designed to be accessible and calming
- Information on the benefits of connecting with nature
- A link to the Flinders Gully Hike, encouraging exploration of local green spaces at Bedford (if you are at one of our other campuses, let us know in comments below where the closest nature spaces are)
One of the key messages of the project is that you don’t need to be on campus to benefit. Just 10 minutes in your backyard or a walk around the block can make a difference. Research cited in the project highlights that short periods in nature can have a measurable positive impact on mental health.
The student hopes the resource will be useful not just for fellow uni students, but also for teachers and the general public. Essentially anyone feeling the pressure of deadlines and daily life and who could use the healing power of nature.
