Student Success and Wellbeing Advisors (SSWA) work every day with students to get them back on track if they falter. Mel, one of the SSWA recorded a video for orientation sessions in which she shares her top tips for success. I asked to put it on BetterU. She said ‘yeppers’ (she didn’t actually use that word.
It is Orientation Time!

Welcome new and returning students!
With the campus(es) coming to life, I’ll probably be hiding somewhere.
In fact, if you see me in the corner looking scared, you can usually lure me out with chocolate. If that doesn’t work, chase me with a broom.
Now, I’ve already written my Orientation welcome message (which you can see here) and shared my own advice for getting off to a good start.
But last week, in a conversation with Nursing topic coordinator Bec and Student Success and Wellbeing Advisor Mel, Mel revealed that she had recorded a ‘top tips for academic success’ video for the College of Nursing and Health Sciences and College of Medicine and Public Health.
I’m all about sharing good tips here on BetterU, so I asked if Mel would share it.
She did. It was excellent. So, I asked whether I could feature the video here on BetterU. She said yes.
Here we are.
What is a Student Success and Wellbeing Advisor (SSWA)?
SSWAs at Flinders provide personalised, practical support to help students navigate university life, build confidence, and stay on track academically and personally.
They work with students to boost motivation, plan study approaches, set and achieve goals, understand how the university system works, and identify individual strengths.
They also act as a friendly first point of contact who can help students figure out what they need and connect them with the right campus services.
SSWAs are allocated to specific Colleges, so Mel works with students from College of Nursing and Health Sciences and College of Medicine and Public Health, which she mentions in the video.
But never fear, there are SSWA for the other colleges as well. One of the others is also called Mel.
Learn more about what they do and make an appointment here.
But the star of this post is the video!
The reason I am including Mel’s video is because of the success tips she provides and her explanation of the role of SSWAs.
Mel works every day with students to help them get back on track. Her tips are road-tested and robust.
Follow Mel’s advice. She knows what she is talking about.
The video itself is hosted on the university learning system. You can click here or the image below.
Let me know if you have any troubles viewing it (you can, if you login with your FAN and password add comments to blog posts).
