Interested in developing the skills needed in the future workforce? New Venture Institute’s Innovation and Future Skills workshop program might be right up your alley.
When I graduated I had a fairly limited conceptualisation of ‘mental health’ that basically focused on mental illness. If you’d asked Gareth back then ‘how do I work on my mental health?’ he would have inquired as you whether you were experiencing any symptoms of mental illness and suggested strategies to manage those.
Nowadays I hold a much broader definition of mental health, which can include the development of just about any mental capacity. Ask me now ‘how do I work on my mental health?’ and I’d be curious as to what mental capacity you want to grow and nurture. It might be something related to mental illness (e.g. the ability to manage big emotions) but it could also be thinking more creatively, lifelong learning, self-awareness, teamwork, confidence, taking feedback and lots more.
The wellbeing and performance programs coming out of wellbeing services can be found here. They focus on more traditional ‘mental health’ topics like mindfulness, self-care, communication skills and social connection.
But they aren’t the only workshops and seminars on offer that can help you develop your mental capacities.
Julia Miller from Flinders New Venture Institute (NVI) contacted me to let me know they have their Innovation and Future Skills workshops up on Careerhub now and there are some great topics in the mix (critical and analytical thinking, innovation, resilience, flexibility, self-awareness, learning, teamwork, confidence, leadership, feedback, change and more).
Who are NVI? The short version – “At NVI, we help students develop future skills, so they’re equipped for what comes next. Through hands-on programs, workshops, and industry engagement, we bridge the gap between university and the real world—giving students the skills, experience, and networks to create impact.”
You can learn more about them here.
For the time being though, just check out their content on Careerhub and see if any of the workshops are on topics of interest to you.
