We’re past the halfway point of semester. Assignments are stacking up, your inbox is groaning, and somehow Netflix knows exactly when to release a new season of your favourite show.
If your focus has gone AWOL, don’t worry — you’re not alone. Here are three practical ways, grounded in mindfulness, to help you sharpen up and finish the semester strong.
- Try the “Pomodoro + Pause” technique ⏱️🌿
You’ve probably heard of the Pomodoro method — 25 minutes of study, 5 minutes break. But here’s the upgrade: use your breaks as mini mindfulness pauses. Instead of scrolling TikTok, stand up, close your laptop, and take a few slow breaths while noticing what’s happening around you. Research shows that even short bouts of mindful attention can reset your concentration and reduce mental fatigue. You’ll come back to the books fresher, calmer, and more focused.
- Anchor your attention with a simple body scan 🧘♂️👣
When your mind wanders mid-lecture (suddenly you’re thinking about dinner… or whether your houseplants are thriving), a quick body scan can pull you back. Sit comfortably, close your eyes if you like, and bring your attention to your feet, then slowly move up your body noticing sensations. This takes less than two minutes and helps cut through the “mental static.” Evidence from mindfulness research shows that body awareness improves sustained attention and reduces stress — exactly what you need when the semester workload gets heavy.
