HCD and Oasis Wellbeing Programs (July 2022) ๐Ÿ“…


Overview: This post is intended to be an up-to-date detailed overview of the wellbeing programs and events being run out of Health, Counselling and Disability Services and Oasis. As dates are finalised or changed, we’ll update this post. Reading time ~ 9 minutes


Welcome to 2022! A new year can mean a fresh start in terms of our health and wellbeing.

The teams at Health, Counselling and Disability Services (HCDS) and Oasis work hard each year to put together a diverse range of wellbeing-focused programs and events.

These are the programs and events that students can participate in to help maximise their own wellbeing and productivity, but also become attentive and skilled at helping others.

These are in addition to the health, counselling, disability, and equal opportunity services that we already offer.

This blog post, which is pinned to the top of the Student Health and Wellbeing Blog is updated on a regular basis as programs are developed and launched.

I’ve also included in this list some programs that are run by other groups in the university that have a productivity/ wellbeing focus.

HCDS and OASIS Programs

All of the following programs are back for 2022

Flinders Mates – Student-led informal conversations connecting Australian and International students for cultural exchange, meeting new people and making friends. Held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 12.00 to 1.00pm at the Oasis Community Centre (J7 on the campus map). Now running. Just turn up!! More info

 

Mindful Yoga – a weekly combined meditation/yoga class run by Counsellor Maureen blending gentle movements, self-compassion and mindful presence – https://oasis.flinders.edu.au/mindful-yoga-class/. Now running at Oasis on Tuesdays from 12-1.

 

Meditation – two weekly meditation sessions @ Oasis led by one of the Oasis team – https://oasis.flinders.edu.au/meditation-for-relaxation-and-stress-relief/ – can access either face-to-face (at the Oasis Centre) or online via Oasis Online. Now running on Wednesdays and Fridays at 12pm.

 

Mindfulness for Academic Success – a 5-session program teaching you to use mindfulness to reduce stress, improve focus, stop procrastinating, communicate better and study more efficiently – https://oasis.flinders.edu.au/mindfulness-for-academic-success-2/. To register your interest in attending, complete the attached form and email to maureen.germein@flinders.edu.au with your name, FAN and which option you’d like to attend.

Dates for 2022

Option 1 โžก Program starting Wednesday 27th July, for five consecutive weeks, from 9-10am in the Oasis Common Room

 

Flinders Market – a community market with free and cheap food to ensure all students are well nourished – https://oasis.flinders.edu.au/flinders-community-market/ ๐Ÿฅ‘๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿฅ—๐Ÿฅ”๐Ÿฅ’ ย Is now up and running!ย 

 

Be Well Plan – a 5 x 2-hour program (or 1 x 6 hour) that teaches you how to develop your own mental health and wellbeing plan. Sessions are led by counsellors from HCD as well as trained facilitators from the School of Psychology. Dates for 2022

Option 2 โžก Program starting Friday 13th May, for five consecutive weeks, from 10am to 12pm in the Oasis Common Room (or Collaborate if restrictions are in place) (full)

Option 3 โžก Program starting Tuesday 16th August, for five consecutive weeks, from 3pm to 5pm on Collaborate (currently taking registrations)

Option 4 โžก 1 x 6 hour session on the 21st October, starting 9am in the Oasis Common Room (or Collaborate if restrictions are in place)

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) – a program that equips you with the skills to support people with mental health problems. Currently on hold. Stay tuned.ย 

 

Studyology – a 5-session group program designed to give you the psychological tools necessary to combat common study problems like procrastination, perfectionism, low motivation and study avoidance. One program is starting in April. The second is starting in August. โ€“ 5 x 1 hour sessions on Thursdays 6.30 to 7.30pm from the 4th August to 1st September โ€“ Online in Collaborate

Learn about the tactics that you can use to foster positive mental health. Live life according to Good Vibes principles.

 

Conversation Groups – Conversation groups are fun and informal conversation sessions led by an Oasis Chaplain on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The focus is getting students together for a chat and to check in and talk about whichever topic comes up! Great for those who are feeling a little bit socially isolated. Also a great opportunity to practice your English (if itโ€™s your second language). The groups are for all students. Events run by OASIS

Oasis will be leading events around the university marking these important days and weeks.

RUOK Day (September) – a national day of action encouraging us all to check in on our friends, family, and peers – https://www.ruok.org.au/

NAIDOC Week (July) – NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples – https://www.naidoc.org.au/

National Sorry Day (July) – National Sorry Day marks the anniversary of the tabling in Federal Parliament of the Bringing Them Home Report of the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families, on 26 May 1997.

University Mental Health Weekย (May) – bringing together the university community to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing. Mental health promotion activities will run throughout that week.

Mental Health Month (October) – stick close to Oasis Social media (Facebook and Instagram) for activities happening on campus and online during Mental Health Month (October 2021). Includes giveaways and competitions!
